Meet Dr. Ammon Kau

As a pediatric dentist, I consider my profession a way of making a positive difference in the lives of the children of Hawaii. I appreciate each child as an individual and care for them as if they were my own: gently and kindly, with great patience and compassion. I want each young patient to know that I care about them, that they are important to my team and to me, that they are safe here, and that we can help them be healthier and happier.

My team and I are good listeners, to both our young patients and their families. We want to understand parents’ concerns and expectations, and establish good communication with them. At the same time, we engage with the kids in a non-threatening, respectful and sometimes playful manner, building trust and friendships.

We do everything we can to ensure smile-filled experiences, so children feel at ease in the dental environment and know how and why they need to take care of their teeth. Above all, we genuinely care about each child and their family and are humbled by the trust placed in us.

Education and Experience

I grew up in Kaneohe, on Oahu, and knew from a young age that I wanted a profession that helped people. I learned that Hawaii has some of the highest cavity rates in children and, as a local boy, I wanted to help combat dental disease amongst Hawaii’s kids.

Prior to practicing pediatric dentistry, I completed the following:

  • Bachelor of Science, Brigham Young University
  • Doctorate of Dental Surgery, University of Missouri-Kansas City Dental School
  • Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) Residency, Lutheran Medical Center-Waimanalo
  • Pediatric Dentistry Residency, Lutheran Medical Center-Waianae

I’ve practiced pediatric dentistry since 2014 and love everything about it!

Having completed two post-dental school residencies is of significant benefit to my patients. My advanced training in Pediatric Dentistry allows me to specialize in the unique dental concerns of infants, toddlers, children, teens, and special needs patients. My AEGD training helps me also to recognize and address future concerns and issues children will face as they mature.

Professional Affiliations and Constant Learning

I am an active member of the:

  • American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry
  • American Dental Association
  • Hawaii Dental Association

Oral healthcare, and the pediatric dentistry specialty, is constantly changing. Research leads to new products, techniques, and a deeper understanding of oral health and how to address the needs of a growing mouth – and body. Through active and ongoing continuing education, I stay current with the latest options and emerging trends. By carefully assessing each new development, looking specifically for those that improve patient care and deliver predictable results, I ensure patients are receiving the best of modern dentistry.

Beyond the Practice

My family and I have lived on the Big Island for seven years: my wife of over 15 years, Ruth, and our five children. We enjoy spending time together surfing, kayaking, and savoring the beauty of the Big Island.

If I’m not in the office, I’m mostly likely to be found hanging out with family. We perform together, pound poi, garden, and enjoy various sports. I like surfing and fishing, too, and serving in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
